The world's pollinators, including honeybees, are dying at an alarming rate. This not only has an effect on the flora and fauna in our environments, but also on our food supply. One of the best ways to counteract the effects of a dwindling honeybee population is to increase the number of beekeepers and make smarter beekeepers by sharing experiences and providing space to keep bees.
Charleston Community Bee Gardens (CCBG) was established in 2012 with the simple mission of promoting bees and beekeeping in the Charleston area. Our long-time dream has been to establish a community apiary, where city dwellers without yards, or those living in restrictive neighborhoods, can keep hives of their own.
A group of backyard beekeepers started CCBG to promote honey bees, beekeeping and the creative use of land in and around Charleston, SC. Since our founding we have partnered with local beekeeper associations and several gardening groups throughout the area.
Our set GOALS are to:
• Establish several demonstration apiaries in the area in partnership with local urban farming organizations;
• Utilize certified beekeepers for mentoring beginning and part-time beekeepers
• Hold monthly meet ups for urban beekeepers to share their knowledge and build on the knowledge base of the local beekeeping community; and
• Host dozens of open apiary visits and educational programs to local schools and residents. We are getting the word out about the challenges honeybees face, the benefits of honey bees in urban settings and the delights of local honey. We conduct quarterly classroom experiences supported by our local Technical College. Many of our members live in neighborhoods, making it difficult for them to install “backyard beehives.” In response, CCBG is working with a local farm co-op and an environmental education center to secure suitable spaces for community apiaries. At these sites, trained beekeepers are able to place a hive of their own, under the umbrella of CCBG—utilizing our insurance, shared equipment, and knowledge. We're raising funds for outfitting students, and purchasing pollinator plants. The sites have been developed using all volunteer labor from our committed community of pollinator enthusiasts!
